Infosys steps up overseas hiring and training to improve sales effectiveness

India’s second largest software company, Infosys is attempting a turnaround by stepping up its hiring plans in overseas markets and enhancing training for all client-facing executives as part of its sales push plans.

This model is based upon capacity increase, capability increase, and finally sales effectiveness.

The company is not only focused on sales capability but also its ability to engage with clients in a consultative manner by helping them identify and solve business problems. The training is aimed at giving hands-on learning on actual clients and sales proposals.

The company has also restructured its go-to-market approach where they are willing to enhance their presence; namely insurance, life sciences, healthcare, energy & utilities.

In addition to experienced personnel, some 200 executives are being hired from B-schools, improving connections in cultural and business contexts overseas, particularly in Germany and France.

New technology skills take centre stage as SMAC begin to dominate enterprise and consumer apps

More companies are expected to use big data services to create personalized offers in 2014.As the companies shift to a world in which social media, mobility, data analytics and cloud computing (SMAC) begin to dominate enterprise and consumer applications, new technology skills are taking centre stage.

Adding up to this, specific platforms & technologies and soft skills (including the ability to articulate the big picture, ability to communicate disruptive ideas, multi-disciplinary skills with appropriate depth of specialization, learnability and resilience) are commanding a premium.

So, any engineer with proficiency in data analytics can grab more money in comparison to engineers with proficiency in just coding.

Moreover, it is predicted that cloud computing will generate up to 2 million jobs by 2015. Thus, the knowledge of these skill sets will reshape the market by generating huge potential for the IT companies and enabling professionals to command a higher premium.

Retail Services

Retail in 2014: Digital technology and the future of merchandising

Retailers have refined the science of merchandising for hundreds of years, but the interruption of the internet and ecommerce has been an enormous catalyst of change for the industry.

In 2014, merchandising continues to reshape itself with three important trends: Discovery, Seasonality and Compression.

1. Discovery - In the early days of internet, we used to search for things we had seen in TV’s or magazines. Web at that time helped in reaching those new products. But today, the core technology of news feeds helps in discovering things. Thus, now retailers will begin investing more in the art of digital discovery to leverage its business opportunities.

2. Seasonality - Whether humorous, insightful or empathetic, timeliness is core to the retailers. For customers, availability of the product at the correct time remains a key motivator. Thus, digital technology provides savvy retailers the opportunity to make use of the digital technology as and when demanded.

3. Compression - With the evolution towards smaller and mobile devices, compression forces the marketers to be more thoughtful and creative in terms of targeting the customers. The key to successful marketing is presenting the right product to the right customer in a right manner so that it penetrates into the minds of the consumers.

Ancillary service providers for e-commerce: attracting investor attention

A network of ancillary service providers helping retailers go digital or venture into mobile-commerce and drive digital marketing and data analytics, are attracting investor interest.

These ancillary service providers offer a host of services from setting up a portal to converting clicks into a transaction using the software-as-product model. By helping the offline retailers go online through private marketplaces and publishing their adverts in marketplace of bigger e-commerce ventures, they help them explore the digital space.

The boom in the e-commerce sector has led to the maturity of software products industry. The mounting realization of the importance of making the venture visible beyond social media platforms and to get a greater visibility, these ancillary/spare parts providers are looking at mature global markets for a better footing.

Automotive Sector

Auto sector jobs revival: dependent upon sales pickup

The combined investment and the statements of the various banking bodies state that a little more than 21,000 new direct jobs are probable to be created across half a dozen factories coming on stream over the next two years.

At present, it is not predictable how the demand situation will turn out and the overall mood on this front seems quite gloomy; although 3-5% sales increase is expected when the economy stabilizes. However, the overall hiring scene is contingent on a strong demand pick-up and expansion.

Based on various estimates, the number of indirect supplementary jobs created would be between three and five for every direct job that comes up. So, the number of jobs that are likely to be created over the next 2 years could be 80,000 to 120,000.

The major employers would include Ford India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, HMSI, etc.

Slump in automobile sector claims 2 lakh jobs

The longest period of slump in India's automobile market, with sales declining for a second straight year, has taken its toll with production cuts leading to the loss of about 2,00,000 jobs.

A consistent fall in demand and sales for the past two years is likely to create a huge employment gap. Across the entire value chain in the auto industry, right from raw materials to the dealerships there could be around 1.5-2 lakh job losses.

With the industry not expecting an immediate turnaround, even with a cut in excise duty, according to industry sources, the biggest job losses will be occurring at the retail levels, mainly dealerships that sell all class of vehicles - from bikes to trucks. Additionally, component manufacturers will also be hit hard.

Auto industry is one of the key industries which contribute to growth in the employment of manufacturing sector. It is difficult to give the exact number of employment loss but it can be anywhere in the range of 1.25 to 1.5 lakh.

Healthcare Sector

India's biotech sector likely to touch $7 bn by FY15

India's biotech sector, comprising of about 400 companies, has grown three-fold in last five years and is likely to touch USD 7 billion mark by end of the current fiscal.

Bio-pharma is the largest sector contributing about 62 per cent of the total revenue followed by bio services (18 per cent), bio agri (15), bio industry (4), while bio informatics is still at a hopeful stage contributing just about one per cent of the total revenue.

India has emerged as a leading destination for clinical trials, contract research and manufacturing activities owing to the growth in the bio services sector which accounts for revenue generation worth about Rs 3,800 crore.

India's biotechnology sector is benefiting from several advantages like cost effectiveness, research and development expertise and personal skills as the country is now globally recognized as an ideal location for manufacturing biotech products and for conducting high-level research programmes in the field.

However, dearth of trained manpower is a key challenge particularly in the area critical for success of discovery programmes.

Both industry and the government need to take concrete steps to bolster R&D capabilities by providing on the job training and aggressively recruiting personnel to fill in the gaps.

Telecom Sector

Hiring in telecom sector to gradually pick up pace

As the telecom operators move for a new phase of expansion, hiring trend is set to boost up again in the sector.

As many as 7000 jobs will be created in the telecom sector in 12 months period. Key players such as, Vodafone will add 1,800 employees to take care of its $3-billion expansion plan; Bharti Airtel and Uninor will also be the other operators to hire.

The cumulative hiring in the telecom industry in 2014-15 would be 15-20 per cent higher than in the previous financial year majorly skewed towards smaller cities, majorly because of greater feasibility in hiring talent at a much lower cost and high retention rate.

The planned expansion, network upgradation, and the growing data market, including the emergence of 4G, will create fresh employment.

The new corporate 'in-thing'

Gamification: The New Corporate buzzword

A roll of the dice is all it takes for an employee to become boss? True it stands.

The word 'gamification' — in play across organizations globally, is the application of game mechanics and experience design to a business setting in to make tasks fun and engaging and drive business results.

Various management consultancies have enabled the use of gamification techniques to make the business tasks cool and appealing.

While gamification isn't the only path to increased engagement, businesses that leverage this opportunity effectively can drive substantial increases in revenue. Its true value goes beyond mere employee engagement and recruitment to impact analysis as well as enabling companies to adopt suitable business strategies.

Several areas where companies are encouraging the application of gamification techniques are training, skill development, mounting innovation, measuring/improving employee performance and instilling behavioral change in employees. Today, companies are increasingly using gamification tools to change behavioral patterns. Moreover, deployment of gamification in recruitment is helping in screening of applicant's analytical skills as well which may not be possible via traditional hiring means.

Going forward, gamification will increasingly involve embedding serious behavioral science elements engineered towards attaining desired business goals. Achieving end result of improving satisfaction scores, gaining a sharper learning curve in terms of role expectations, performance requirements and cultural assimilation will remain the main outline of gamification.
